Orrefors glass factory

Director Johan Ekman of Gothenburg acquired in 1913 the Orrefors factory and in 1914 began the production of crystal glass. The artist Simon Gate was employed in 1916 and one year later the artist Edward Hald joined the company. These two artists designed art glass as well as table glass. Together with glass master Knut Bergqvist Gate and Hald made experiments with glass with over lay and the result became the Graal glass. The international break through for Orrefors came at the world exhibition in Paris 1925. This was the starting point for the long tradition of creative design in close cooperation with genuine and innovative craftsmanship.

New designers and skilled glass workers have since that time been expanding the production in the spirit of Gate and Hald. Vicke Lindstrand and Edvin Öhrström developed the new technique Ariel in the 1930-ies, Sven Palmqvist did Kraka and Ravenna in the 40-ies, and in the 50-ies added Fuga, which together with Nils Landberg´s graceful Tulip glass and Ingeborg Lundin´s Apple, are still considered as the renaissance of Swedish design. The 1960-ies saw the Pop glass bt Gunnar Cyrén, and in the 70-ies cmae, in addition to Cyrén, also Eva Englund, Olle Alberius, Lars Hellsten and Jan Johansson to work at Orrefors. Later in the 80-ies the designers Anne Nilsson, Erika Lagerbielke, Helen Krantz, Matz Borgström, Per B Sundberg, Martti Rytkönen, Lena bergström, Ingegerd Råman, have contributed to pass on the design heritage of Orrefors. The national glass school with training of glass workers and blowers, is situated in Orrefors.

In 1990 Orrefors joined Kosta Boda in the Orrefors Kosta Boda Inc. under Danish ownership, and in 2005 the company was acquired by the New Wave Group. The art glass production has gradually been reduced and the designers have left the company. In December 2012 the Orrefors glass factory was definitely closed.
