Monica Backström

Monica Backström was born 1939. She studied at the School of Art and Design in Stockholm 1959 – 64, graduating in metal. She won a competition on new glass design for Boda glass factory and became employed in 1965. She experimented with combinations of glass and metal, including metal pins and gratings into plates and cups. She made glass foliated with mercury and called it ”Poor mans silver”, decorative glass for the table covered with multicolor glass sand in shapes of mushroom, eggs etc., as well as series of table glass for wine. Her later production has been series of unique glass objects in complicated glass techniques. She has also made many public installations of glass.


Monica Backström is a very well known glass designer. She has exhibited widely and she is represented at a large number of museums in Sweden and internationally.
