Bertil Vallien

Bertil Vallien was born in Stockholm 1938 and he studied at the School of Art and Design 1957 – 61. He travelled for studies in Mexico and the US 1961 – 63. He lives and has been working at the Åfors glass factory since 1963.

During the 1960-ies he shared his time between ceramics and glass, but later he became mainly a glass artist, with some work also in wood and iron.

Bertil Vallien developed during the 1970-ies the technique of sand casting glass sculpture, in the shape of heads, shields, boats. The motives are often in a mythical or religious symbolism. His glass art is well known internationally and he is one of the best known Swedish glass artists. He has had many public commissions, e.g. an altar piece in the cathedral of Växjö.

Bertil Vallien has exhibited world wide. He has been teaching at different glass schools, e.g at Pilchuk in Washington State, US. He is represented at many museums, e.g. the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm, Metropolitan Museum of New York, Tokio Art Museum, the Swedish Glass Museum in Växjö, the Vida Museum of Oland.
